“Trump is doing exactly what he said he would with immigration, and those views seem to have a lot of support, which makes his actions fundamentally democratic.” — Tangle Editor Will Kaback
Ask yourself why Democrats have failed on immigration reform. Watch this great speech on this was by Colorado’s Senator Bennett 10 years ago!
https://youtu.be/mr1hT8gEFmA?si=IRClLWOPJ8RGg41G. The Republicans are right we need reform and have blocked every bipratisan, Biden has a super plan for a lottery. No one wants open borders. This is yet another Republicans lie.
Trump’s ‘reform’ is cruel. Kids were put in cages last time. Now? Deporting immigrants to cages in Panama jungles with no journalists permitted. This is not humane, nor is it. solution.
no argument to much of what you wrote, but how did you answer the question : rule of law - yes or no? Obama had both House and Senate for two years. For example, in fiscal year 2023 alone, there were over 2.4 million encounters at the border and that’s the ones they caught which is maybe one in five or ten or ?
The large majority of people will never understand foreign aid, diplomacy, NATO or that USAID is less than one percent of Federal spending. Most people estimate that we spend 25% on foreign aid. You can’t fix that. They do see how our country has changed. Since Bennett’s speech we’ve endured Covid, mass shootings like Las Vegas, Parkland, Uvalde, extreme weather events related to climate change, the Jan. 6th attack on the capital, and an explosion of living costs/inflation. All complex problems, but most people don’t think complex. Immigration is something people can see, they don’t like it, and the Republicans used it effectively. This isn’t about what is fair or humanitarian. It’s about perception and losing elections.
Legal immigration, handled humanely and compassionately is what the end goal should be. Unfortunately, it’s politically expedient for the hard right to treat immigration as a political football, kicking it around when convenient (see Faux “News” coverage of migrant caravans when it suits their purposes), and killing the bipartisan immigration bills over and over.
Immigration is what made America what she is today. “Give us your poor, your huddled masses…” The Medici Effect shows what happens when diverse viewpoints are used to strengthen the fabric of society. We have to be willing to accept alternate, tolerate viewpoints, and build from there.
Demonizing the “other” is what is happening now in Europe and in the US, and it’s tearing the fabric of society apart, not knitting it together.
The people who voted for Trump are demonized everyday on social media, cable, and most of the media. They are called stupid, lazy , ignorant and evil. I agree with your points, but most people don’t understand complex issues. But they do see the hypocrisy of liberals talking about the rule of law and letting illegal immigration happen. Obama had a window of opportunity and he flubbed it. The Dems focus has been elsewhere and the Republicans have used immigration as a club to beat us.
Voting for a fascist, is, kind of by definition, evil and/or ignorant.
Voting is a choice. Taking people to task for their choice is a fair discussion point.
The color of a person's skin or where they are born is not a choice. Demonizing them for something they cannot change is not a fair point of discussion.
All valid, rational and humane viewpoints, Rustam. I respect what you’re saying. But the world is what it is. People are products of their experiences and environments and many off those are foreign to you and I. Immigration is a flash point for many, no matter who is to blame. We desperately need a solution acceptable to the masses before we can compete with conservative viewpoints on other issues.
